Musty and Dirty Seats

An unfortunate outcome of the leaky window situation, which perhaps was going on for years, is that the car in general has adopted a pretty strong musty/moldy smell. The biggest culprit: the seats, which are big and spongy and seem to have developed a world of their own inside them. They're also just dirty.

After much internetting, it sounds like there are a few options to try:

  • Shampoo

  • Steam

  • Baking Soda

  • Vinegar

  • Sun

  • Throw them out

Because I’ve been looking for a reason to buy a steamer, I’m starting there.

Sweet.

Now onto the seats. The bar is low.

Steaming things is so weirdly satisfying.

The verdict: the steam really helps break up the dirt on the surface. Not sure yet on the smell. I think I should probably shampoo them, which sounds obvious in retrospect, but I really wanted to use the steamer.

Onto the shampooing: I’m using a product from Chemical Guys, which, according to the internets, is what the auto detailers use to magically restore fabric.

More to come…
